Doug Flutie has what it takes to be a starting qb in the nfl, unfortunately coaches won't give him a chance because of his size and yes the fact that he's Canadian. Im surprised Flutie didn't take over the chargers earlier, Drew Brees sucks. I know you ask for a legitimate reason 3peet and this is cleary my opinion, but Flutie has the passion to win on every play, he has football smarts, he makes everyone around him play better, he inspires a team that needs to be inspired. If Drew Brees was starting for the chargers i would be all over Min, but the unknown factor Flutie is getting the start i won't touch this game. I can see Flutie taking over the team from this point on and Flutie will want to make a statement that he belongs in this league. Min can't stop the run and LT should get a lot of touches and then Flutie has Boston to throw too, and the fact the line on the game is questionable. Too many factors to consider, but if you like Min so much you wouldn't be having any doubts on your play. I hope you win your play 3peet, but i will be cheering for Grandpa Flutie come gametime

Doug Flutie isn't Canadian. He's an American who played in the CFL.

At any rate, could the reason he's starting have as much to do with ticket sales as anything else? He can be fun to watch, inspires his teammates, and generally makes for a more emotional game. I doubt he'll provide any kind of substantial solution, especially since their season is pretty much lost, but if he can get the fans back in their seats, and help the Chargers go out with a respectable second half, then it's a smart move.

The reason DF is starting is because Schottenheimer is trying to save his ass. Brees has had a horrible year, and yes he has a terrible OL, but his passes have been way off mark. Everyone here in SD knows DF is not the answer, but the truth is that you will see a more inspired offense with DF at the helm, which was evident in last weeks game.

Flutie can make things happen that DB can't, but the crappy offensive line will eventually catch up to him too...so look for the Flutie magic to last all of one or two games...maybe even quarters.

The San Diego Chargers are in ruins and it goes back to Bobby Beathard's last few years with the team. Those drafts in the late 90's should have formed the nucleus of this team and I don't think there are more than two or three guys on the roster that came from his drafts. Compound that with John Butler's absolute horrible evaluation of talent (Wiley, Alexander, Flutie, Dwight, McNeil now cut, etc. etc.), all of which are making huge $$$$$, and you get the Chargers. I don't know why Butler had such high praise..It's not like he built an empire in Buffalo, but he did cause them a world of "cap room" hell, much like he has done with the Bolts.

One more thing. The Chargers have done absolutely nothing to address their biggest holes in the past two drafts, which are the offensive and defensive line. The spent three draft picks on secondary guys in 2003 so they can be more physical and play more bump and run. So what does the DC do this year? He has the corners 10 yards off the line and their getting torched on the short routes...as well as the deep routes. Of course, much like last year, there is absolutely no pass rush.

This team is in shambles and it starts at the top. Dean Spanos knows nothing about football, except how to hire retreads and pray they can dig him out of the shithouse he has built.

I do think that if the Chargers can rebuild their OL and DL in the next two drafts and through free agency, and lose some of the fat at the top of the $$$$$ chain, this team could be very good in two or three years, even with Brees at QB.

Did you want my opinion?

flutie is canadian.... thats a funny reason not to give him a chance. Maybe Rush Limbaugh could come out and say that flutie is overrated due to the media trying to pump up canadians in football. Hey aye no ice on that field.....

remember when he was at Buffalo and everyone was calling him Magic. Well, SD needs him to but butts in the seats and give the fans hope. When the new or young thing or person not working, people always going to look at the old trustworthy , proven, icon or idol they can get a hold of.

all i can say is i have the over 45 for the game large and i'm quite happy fluitie is working wonders!!

HIS ENERGY IS UNPARALLELED. AGE IS IRRELEVANT WHEN IT COMES TO FLUTIE. HE HAS MORE ENERGY THAT MOST HIGH SCHOOL KIDS. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE STARTER FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON. iF HE WAS, PERHAPS THE CHARGERS WOULDN'T BE OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS.

Going back to last game, Flutie has QB'd 6 drives that have led to 5 touchdowns.

He is remarkable.

But trust me, this success will be short-lived. The rest of the league will figure out how to defend him, same as they did two years ago, and SD fans will be calling for Brees to go back in....same as they did two years ago.
