The reason DF is starting is because Schottenheimer is trying to save his ass. Brees has had a horrible year, and yes he has a terrible OL, but his passes have been way off mark. Everyone here in SD knows DF is not the answer, but the truth is that you will see a more inspired offense with DF at the helm, which was evident in last weeks game.
Flutie can make things happen that DB can't, but the crappy offensive line will eventually catch up to him too...so look for the Flutie magic to last all of one or two games...maybe even quarters.
The San Diego Chargers are in ruins and it goes back to Bobby Beathard's last few years with the team. Those drafts in the late 90's should have formed the nucleus of this team and I don't think there are more than two or three guys on the roster that came from his drafts. Compound that with John Butler's absolute horrible evaluation of talent (Wiley, Alexander, Flutie, Dwight, McNeil now cut, etc. etc.), all of which are making huge $$$$$, and you get the Chargers. I don't know why Butler had such high praise..It's not like he built an empire in Buffalo, but he did cause them a world of "cap room" hell, much like he has done with the Bolts.
One more thing. The Chargers have done absolutely nothing to address their biggest holes in the past two drafts, which are the offensive and defensive line. The spent three draft picks on secondary guys in 2003 so they can be more physical and play more bump and run. So what does the DC do this year? He has the corners 10 yards off the line and their getting torched on the short routes...as well as the deep routes. Of course, much like last year, there is absolutely no pass rush.
This team is in shambles and it starts at the top. Dean Spanos knows nothing about football, except how to hire retreads and pray they can dig him out of the shithouse he has built.
I do think that if the Chargers can rebuild their OL and DL in the next two drafts and through free agency, and lose some of the fat at the top of the $$$$$ chain, this team could be very good in two or three years, even with Brees at QB.
Did you want my opinion?
